skip to navigation oax 9f - a 1968 bristol relh chassis, with leyland o.600 engine & eastern coach works body new! see the routes ruby operated fifty years ago in 1968. click here. offside image by m mcdermott this website tells the story of red & white services ltd and one of their classic british-built coaches - a series ii bristol relh (rear engine long high) chassis. the coach is powered by a leyland o.600 diesel engine. this drives through a self-changing gears five speed semi-automatic, pnuemo-cyclic gearbox. the chassis was constructed by bristol commercial vehicles and was completed on 15 september 1967. eastern coach works of lowestoft built her body which was completed by 10 february 1968. the luxury coach specification included 47 high-backed leather-trimmed seats (with arm rests, ash-trays and adjustable foot rests), fluorescent interior lighting, forced-air ventilation, floor-mounted heater units, a two-piece folding electrically operated door and a two-piece destination display. red & white services of chepstow took delivery of our coach on 5 march 1968. two days later they registered her oax 9f (and allocated fleet number: rc.968 ). our coach was one of ten delivered to r&w in the spring of 1968 (registrations: oax 1-10f). she joined eleven similar bristol relh coaches which were new in 1966 with gardner engines (gwo 1-11d). in 1969 the company bought a further eleven relhs which, like ours, had leyland o.600 engines (sax 1-11g). 1967 became known as the ‘summer of love’ (due to the hippy festivals that took place then). as our coach originates from this year and she was bought by a company whose very name and livery included red, so it seemed appropriate we called her ruby (after the red gem-stone often associated with love). and yes, we do love her too! rc.968 was initially allocated to aberdare (gadlys) depot, but was soon transferred to tredegar, from where she worked most of her career. in her early years, ruby’s main associated motorways express routes were: south wales valleys - cheltenham (coach station); cardiff – london (victoria coach station) and swansea - cheltenham. on summer weekends she was used on holiday services to popular seaside resorts like blackpool, ilfracombe and minehead. paris is listed on the destination blind , but we don’t know whether she ever made the voyage to the french capital! in 1975 our coach lost all trace of red, as she was painted into the national bus company (nbc) all-over white ‘national’ coach livery. in 1979 she was down-graded to dual-purpose status and painted into nbc half poppy red and half white livery. she then mainly operated limited-stop bus routes from the south wales valleys into cardiff and newport. ruby was withdrawn by national welsh in july 1983 and bought for preservation in sept that year (along with three other relh coaches). over the last thirty-five years she has had six preservationist owners. she’s now unique, the only ex-red & white bristol relh/6l with ecw mark-1 coachwork still in full working order. sax 1g survives, but has not been roadworthy for 20 years. over the last five years a lot of restoration work and mechanical repairs have been undertaken. work is ongoing. thanks for visiting our website. hope you enjoy it! jonathan 1929 - 1978 click to see ruby on flickr red&white enthusiasts facebook page limited edition brochure 16-page, full colour brochure about ruby - the front cover is shown. gives details of the companies that built her, the companies she operated for, the routes she used to run and information about her restoration. includes original bristol relh chassis drawing from 1966. just £ 3 (including postage & packing). click on the 'donation' button below to buy. all monies go towards further restoration and upkeep. thanks site map: manufacturers bristol re leyland o.600 engine leyland o.600 re-built eastern coach works restoration cavalcade gallery red&whit e r&w bristol re's survivors 1968 rallies contact us website links www.redandwhitebus.co.uk [email protected] 1968 page updated: 11/06/2018 home bristol re ecw o.600 1968 gallery red & white routes r&w re's survivors links rallies you are viewing the text version of this site. to view the full version please install the adobe flash player and ensure your web browser has javascript enabled. need help? check the requirements page. you need flash to use this feature
